Curiosities
What’s your opinion on horror movies? We know there are definitely a lot of horror enthusiasts out there, but we’re mostly looking to see what kind of horrors you like. What’s your favourite era? Do you like modern horrors, or perhaps old school ones? This artist that goes by @grecovia on Instagram is clearly a massive fan of 90s monsters and we see why. It was definitely an interesting time in cinema and special effects, so there were a lot of very unique monsters in movies. Let’s take a look at some of his versions of what we would consider classic 90s monsters.
1. The Cloned Xenomorphs from Alien Resurrection
We couldn’t start a list of 90s monsters and not make the monsters from Alien be the very first one. It’s a classic for a reason and when you look at how these things are designed you realise that a lot of work went into making them look like that.
2. The Hopper Bug from Starship Troopers
Personally, bug monsters are the epitome of horror for me. Idk why but there’s just something about bugs that freaks me out like nothing else. Now make it bigger and you’ve got my worst nightmare.

3. The Arquillian from Men in Black
Men in Black was an incredible example of various creative designs for aliens. We love how weird some of them got and the Arquillian is definitely a very classic alien that we all remember from this movie. And the pug of course.

4. The Chatter Beast from Hellraiser: Bloodline
This weird monster dog will give you nightmares for days. While the artist says that the movie series is definitely not his favourite and are very much lacking, this particular design of a monster appeals to him a lot.

5. Rat Vampire from From Dusk till Dawn
This was definitely one of the weirder creations of the 90s. We’ve seen bat vampires, we’ve seen human vampires, we’ve seen Dracula who’s both, but a rat vampire, that was a leap and the result is giving me the creeps.

6. The Shriekers from Tremors 2: Aftershocks
Is it just me or did everyone watch this movie when they were clearly too young and not emotionally prepared to deal with monsters like this? Nightmares for days were guaranteed back in the 90s, but these days we definitely see more modern monsters inspired by these Shriekers.

7. The Martians from Mars Attacks
This is the funniest monster from the 90s in my opinion, and is there a chance that quite a few modern shows and cartoons took inspiration from the Martians? The brain in a jar concept was pretty funny though.

8. The Flukeman from The X-Files
The artist’s rendition of this monster makes it look way less scary than it was in the show. In X-Files, it was absolutely terrifying and those of you who were obsessed with X-files know that this was the point at which you really started questioning if you should be up that late.

9. The Penguin from Batman Returns
A truly creepy character and the way it looked was so revolting. It’s just so strange cause in many ways the Penguin was human but the proportions, the costume and the disgusting manner made this monster so freaking icky.

10. The City Hunter from Predator 2
This is a classic 90s monster. It’s got way too much stuff on it, but that’s the 90s for you. I mean, it’s got dreads for god’s sake, and way too many teeth and spikes. And the weird armour always looked so fake. And did you ever question why they’re wearing basically fishnets?
